About Us

AITT is the UK's fastest growing accrediting body for workplace transport training.

AITT are the only membership run accrediting body in our industry, and proudly operate solely as a non-profit making organisation. Our purpose is to provide and maintain the highest training standards for operators, instructors and tutors delivering training on all types of workplace transport and material handling equipment.

Using the guidance set out in the HSE Approved Code of Practice (ACoP L117), AITT publishes guidance for the training of operators and instructors. We also ensure that our training providers are adequately audited, and their courses are externally verified, ensuring that training is being provided correctly to our standards.

The AITT council, who help steer AITT into the future, consist of elected members who have been successfully nominated to represent their voice and opinion to AITT’s network. They consist of industry experts, from lift truck manufacturers, H&S representatives, training organisations, and instructors.

Benefits of joining AITT Memberships

AITT have been working on improving Training standards of the material handling industry since 1985.

1985
AITT (originally called the Association of Industry Truck Trainers) was formed by training providers and manufacturers, to discuss training standards of workplace transport in the UK. AITT’s mission was to set out, revise, and maintain alternative standards to RTITB. ITSSAR was also formed, to provide the monitoring, registration and certification for AITT.
1991
The HSE (Formally known as the HSC) recognised AITT/ITSSAR as an accrediting body for workplace transport.
2005
AITT and ITSSAR split, and as a result, each organisation became its own accrediting body to maintain and develop standards.
2008
The HSC became the HSE and stopped administering accrediting bodies.
2012
At the request of the HSE, the ABA (Accrediting Bodies Association) was formed, comprising of the 4 leading accrediting bodies: AITT, ITSSAR, RTITB, and NPORS. Their goal was to set a common level of standards across all awarding bodies.
2014
As part of the membership requirements of the ABA, all operator training delivered by AITT training providers must ensure an extra level of auditing is completed by the awarding body. Therefore, AITT introduced its registration scheme (now called ACORNS - AITT Certificate of Operator Registration Number Scheme). This gave the customer the ability to check an individual training record by contacting AITT with their own unique reference number.
2017
To support the growth of AITT and to plan for the future, AITT moved to a larger premises with conferencing facilities, confirming its commitment to the industry.
2019
AITT’s Managing Director was nominated to become chairman of the ABA, to help move the association forward and complete the set of standards being established across all workplace transport
2019
In 2019, AITT started to branch into offering accredited courses in the heavy plant and construction sector. As a result, we had several courses submitted to CITB for approval, and was successfully awarded 3rd Party Awarding Organisation.
2021
AITT's Managing Directors successfully completed his 2 year term as chairman of the ABA, and stepped down for this position for the role to be rotated
2021
Andy Cartwright appointed as the new Chairman of AITT, and former Chairman Mark Asplen to become vice chairman.
2022
Liam Knight appointed as the new Managing Director of AITT, Jules Cook is appointed as Technical Manager.
2022
Following the AITT council election Jonathan Handley is appointed as Chairman, Andy Cartwright as Vice Chairman and Stuart Taylor is re-elected as Treasurer
